The Department of Sociology was established in the year 2014, following the bifurcation of the then combined ‘Department of Sociology and Social Work’. It made a steady progress introducing teaching programmes at Under Graduate level, initially, in the academic year 2014-15, then the Post-Graduate (M.A) programme in Sociology in the successive academic year in 2015-16; and proceeding further with introduction of the research programmes like M.Phil and Ph.D., subsequently. The Department has a deep commitment of imparting sociological perspective addressing diverse aspects of contemporary society as well as looking back to historical patterns also. Thus it entails understanding specific features within different kinds of societies and exploring the social arrangements that the groups and societies make. Our staff have varied experience of teaching and research and have deep engagement with central sociological issues covering modernity, work, technology, consumerism, family, health, death, education, popular culture, social justice and social policy, religion, poverty and development, law, crime, ethnicity, gender and sexuality, etc., and would be involved in providing teaching and research in these diversified areas adopting both macro and micro sociological approaches.

With an exciting undergraduate level courses as well as a challenging course work at Masters level we plan to prepare the students to build a foundation of critical thinking and research skills and equipping them develop careers in varied professions such as academic research and teaching, media, administration, community development, market research, youth and family services, welfare policy and administration, the evaluation of social programmes, etc.

With the aim of fulfilling the mandate of Maulana Azad National Urdu University, the Department aspires to impart the knowledge and training to learners in Urdu medium and thus anticipates transferring Sociological literature in Urdu language benefitting the large contingent of Urdu speaking population in India and thus to take the Sociology closer to the door step of the people from diverse socio-cultural backgrounds.
